Publisher: Kindle Selling Up To 10,000 Books A Day (AMZN)

/images/kindle.jpg Our quest for Kindle stats continues: Today a small publisher tells us he thinks Amazon is selling 5,000 to 10,000 e-books a day. If correct, that's huge -- prior to the Kindle's November launch, leading e-book retailer Fictionwise was selling about 40,000 titles per month.

David Moynihan, whose Maryland-based Disruptive Publishing publishes an eclectic assortment of erotica and translated Asian classics, says he sells a handful of titles formatted for the Kindle. So how does he arrive those eye-popping numbers? His logic:

Publishers can track a specific title's ranking within the Kindle store in real time, and are updated when they've sold an e-book within an hour of the sale. When one of his books sells -- albeit infrequently -- Moynihan says he immediately sees the title jump in the rankings. While he waits for another copy of the title to sell, the book drops in the rankings as the lower-ranked books rise. That drop, he says, can be from 5,000 to 10,000 spots in a day -- meaning that at least that many titles have sold.

Hi,

The figures quoted for Fictionwise in this article are way too low. We sell in the lower end of the range quoted here for Amazon. And there are other retailers around that mark as well, such as ellora's cave.

In addition, from what I can see this small publisher is basing this projection on results from a single title. I am not sure what the validity of that is. When you consider there were at least 2 inaccuracies in the very first sentence of this blog, I'm not sure anyone should place much stock in the methodology used. Just a couple of weeks ago this same small publisher had far different estimates.

I agree Kindle is selling well, and I wish them all the luck in the world, because we're seeing more and more of our own sales uploaded to kindles and sony devices, already in the range of hundreds of uploads per day. They are bringing much-needed attention to the ebook world and that benefits all ebook retailers. But that's no excuse for sloppy calculations and quoting wildly incorrect figures about other retailers.

Doesn't surprise me at all. My Kindle has been such a godsend to me and my reading habits, that since I got mine on Dec. 4th, I already have almost 400 ebooks on mine, and courtesy of my 8 GB SDHC memory card, I expect to have a thousand by the end of my first year of ownership.

The thing that makes the Kindle mandatory for me is the ability to change font size to larger type as my eyesight deteriates, As I am an avid 81 year old reader, there was no other choice for me. But I found that I loved my Kindle for many other features as well. And I am not alone among other older Kindle owners -- after all, we are all getting there with each new birthday.
