Xbox 360 Owners Buy More Games Than Wii, PS3 Fans

xbox-360.jpgNintendo's (NTDOY) Wii may still be the hottest game console, but in the first 23 months of each console’s life, Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360 owners have bought more games, on average, according to data compiled by gaming Web site Gamasutra.

After 23 months on the market, on average, Xbox 360 owners bought 6.6 games per console, Wii owners bought 5.5 games, and PS3 owners bought 5.3 games. Not a big difference. Educated guess: Nintendo Inc. probably benefited the most from this, because 2.4 games per console were Nintendo's own "first-party" games -- better than Microsoft or Sony.

Why does any of this matter? Because the console makers are betting on royalties and revenues from software sales to offset the development -- and subsidy -- of consoles.

We're not surprised that Sony's PS3 has the smallest number of games per console -- we assume some people bought the gadget as much for its Blu-ray movie player as they did for gaming.

How do these statistics factor in Wii Sports, though? If that's counted as one first-party game for Nintendo, their statistics aren't nearly as good.

This isn't a surprise because most people bought their 360 3 years ago, but wiis are still selling fast.

Obviously older system = longer period of ownship = more games purchased

i whould like to say that mabye why xbox360 users/gamers buy more games cause of the lenght of the games we all know that the xbox360 runs on dvd´s and the ps3 blu-ray its a matter of space on the disc if you have 4.7gb on the dvd you can make games like oblivion for pc and 360 but the blu-ray have much more space than,- the dvd so thats mabye why or just cause of there fail to puplish it 3years before ps3 hehe ;-)

N makes money on its consoles. Is this still the case for MSFT and SNE? At one point both lost money on the console to make it up in licensing.
