World Of Warcraft's "Lich King" Shatters One-Day Sales Record
All those geeks camping out in the cold did it: They helped Blizzard Entertainment set a new one-day sales record for PC games.
The new World of Warcraft add-on "Wrath of the Lich King" sold a whopping 2.8 million units in its first 24 hours. That's at $40 a pop, for more than $100 million in first-day sales.
But the revenue doesn't end there -- WoW subscribers also pay about $15 a month, and at least some people bought the now-rare "collector's edition" of Lich ($70 retail, currently $92 on eBay) which includes playing cards and gives your game character a virtual pet who will follow them around.
The previous record-holder was the first add-on to World of Warcraft, "The Burning Crusade," which sold 2.4 million copies on its first day in January 2007.
Can Blizzard keep this up forever? It can try: CEO Mike Morhaime recently said he'll keep publishing more expansions to WoW as long as there's interest.
