That Was Quick: Google Kills Virtual World 'Lively' (GOOG)

|

lively.JPGGoogle (GOOG) is killing its virtual world, Lively, after less than five months, to focus more on its "core search, ads and apps business."

Smart move, given the rotting economy and pressure for Google to control costs and hit its numbers. One easy way to help both of those: Pull resources away from silly, unnecessary side projects.

(Wonder what else is on the chopping block. Let us know.)

From Google:

In July we launched Lively in Google Labs because we wanted users to be able to interact with their friends and express themselves online in new ways. Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it's the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people's lives. But we've also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off.

That's why, despite all the virtual high fives and creative rooms everyone has enjoyed in the last four and a half months, we've decided to shut Lively down at the end of the year. It has been a tough decision, but we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business. Lively.com will be discontinued at the end of December, and everyone who has worked on the project will then move on to other teams.

We'd encourage all Lively users to capture your hard work by taking videos and screenshots of your rooms.

Too bad Google has never figured out how to monetize this one, people will probably spend more time in virtual realities now that they are out of their jobs.

Pity to see this go. If you're looking for a good virtual environment, head over to Entropia Universe. Software and registration are free and they have a pretty decent community.
No layoffs, though. Google still different. For now.

Google should DUMP GOOGLE APPS and spend money on upgrading Postini's services.

Google Enterprise paid $625M for Postini in July 2007.

Since then, Google Enterprise slashed prices by 75% thinking that demand for Postini would go through the roof.

Later to find that Postini's email security service is NOT price sensitive.

Google Enterprise found out that General Electric wanted Postini but NOT GOOGLE APPS.

Postini has almost 60K businesses that PAY for the service with over 15M end users.

Google APPS has less than 100K paid end users.

Google forgot that you don't get a second chance to make a good first impression to the business world.

Google will never compete with MSFT in the world of business applications outside of search.

Google Enterprise is run by a bunch of idiots who cannot market themselves out of a thin paper bag!

If Google really wanted people to express themselves in new ways they whould open source Lively. Demand would be huge and create a whole new internet. Imagine niche worlds connected together with people free to roam in and out of other niche worlds.

Just let the users create gadgets!! cant google just provide the infrastructure for users to create?? you know why the killed it, not because it didnt attract people but because they wouldn't sttick around. why? because it is a boring experience. google did not hear what the users all complained so much about! thanks for the waste of time!

The Lively Users (Livelyzens as we call ourselves) are coming together to appeal to Google to keep Lively alive.

Lively is a great platform for interaction as well as creativity. It is easy to use, browser based, embeddable on webpages to bring a 3D experience right on your website. While Lively has been in beta and has limited capability in terms of the objects and avatars available, the Livelyzens have been able to come up with very creative ways to create art from what is available. All this in a "clean" 3D world thanks to Google's vigilance in getting rid of rooms with inappropriate content. More than anything, Lively has become a place to make friends for life - from all over the world with wonderful people.

While we are just starting to pull together our appeal plan, a preliminary website has been set up: http://livelyzens.com and we plan to voice our opinion and suggestions through our blog, machinima videos on our youtube channel and more.

We request the netizens to support us in reviving a wonderful 3D world that is a kid friendly and creative space for art and interaction amongst adults.

Lively was disgusting. Glad to see it go after spending a night there being accosted by pervs some months back. If I ever bring my peronal blog back from the dead the post about my experience with it (along with tons of screencaps) will be resurrected with it - I promise. I hated Lively. In the meantime, let's not forget this:
