Sony Cuts PS3 Prices By $150 -- If You Have Good Credit (SNE)

|

playstation-ccw.jpgSony's (SNE) PS3 goes for around $400, compared to about $200 for Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox 360 or $250 for Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii (if you can find the Wii in stock). So to better compete, Sony is cutting the PS3's price by $150. Sort of.

To get a discount, prospective gamers have to apply for a Sony credit card, and once the card arrives they can buy a console to get a $150 credit on their statement. (Or they can get an immediate discount at Sony's online store -- which offers a far worse deal than Amazon's (AMZN) PS3 bundles.)

Sony needs to compete more aggressively on price in the game console market, but this is probably the wrong way to do it. There's a credit crunch going on, and a lot of people with marginal credit who might have been approved for a credit card only a few months ago might get rejected now. We can't think of anything more likely to make prospective customers hate you than to promise them a discount, only then turn them down for it after applying. (Plus, who really wants another credit card -- especially a Sony credit card?)

Far better for Sony to cut prices $100 across the board, and get the consoles in more homes. Then if someone buys a PS3 but can't pay for it, it's someone else's problem.

You do know they had this deal for MANY MANY years for any product if you get the credit card. What a ridiculous post.

lets not forget the wii and xbox360 arent blu ray players. and only *now* are we starting to see $200 blu ray players. (and even then most of those do not support the 2.0 Profile for BD Live)

pretty soon sony will have to lower their ps3 price-- but not because of competition from ms or nintendo.
Richard said:
You do know that there's a serious credit crisis going on right now, don't you Mr. EB? What a ridiculous response.
Ty said:
although xbox 360's nor Wii have blu ray, that will not make a difference to parents shopping for xmas presents. Kids would be very happy to find an Xbox 360 or Wii under the tree and will not complain about lack of blu ray. As blu ray prices decrease and technology improves, it may be too late for sony to decrease prices to catch up with wii and xbox360. Even if Sony cuts in price by $50, it may be enough to keep them at least even with XBOX.

The arrogance of Sony. It obvious these arrogant bastards don`t even realize what`s going on with the econmic crisis.I`m a long time playstation player but with the price these scumbags have been asking for the ps3, I actually detest them , even more now, with this crap about getting a $150.00 discount only if you are aproved for their credit card. What a disgrace, it`s like WE, working folk get punish because we pay with cash. SONY you guys are scumbags.
nick wallace said:
Jorge... If you don't want the discount, don't buy a PS3. And being "working folk" has nothing to do with the choice to use credit or not. If you were moderately intelligent, you would know that credit is just as much an instrument of "working folk" as it is for whoever you happen to exclude from your "working folk" label. Just because you are not intelligent enough or do not have discipline enough to use credit, does not mean that you have to denegrate those who use credit or those who offer discounts to willing and able credit seekers. Please proceed with some ridiculous, ignorant response. Happy Thanksgiving!
Mason said:
It's hypocritical to critize others for being "denegrating" lol when you yourself are doing it. It is also equally ignorant, as your statment would have been considerbaly true a year ago, if deqliuency rates didn't double due not to bad consumer choices but to glooming recession.

nick wallace ....you are a ignorant stuffed vagina for the credit interest scam that infects this country. Ill be glad to slap your senses with truth. PS3 is priced for you rich or wannabe rich with your leveraged asses adding to the demise of this country.

Jorge, you are the scum bag for betraying Sony just because you can't afford the PS3. Go play your stupid low-end WII and don't ever post against Sony. And may I offer a towel to dry your back with?
whysoserious said:
Beyond the fact that Mr. EB already said that this existed far before the PS3, I love the fact that people complain about the price of the PS3, yet for $399 it comes with an 80GB hard drive and 802.11g Wifi built in. Comparing the $399 PS3 with the $199 360 or the $249 Wii is frankly ridiculous.

Quick info for your guys:

The $199 360 has no hard drive, instead coming with a 512MB memory card to match the Wii's offering. The 60GB 360 is $299, and then to add wireless networking is a list price of $99 on amazon making it what? $399. The 120GB 360 "ELITE" is $399... and has no wifi.

The Wii is $249, and has Wifi but is an utterly useless console except for the FEW hardcore titles and a crap-load of waggle-fest for fun at parties. There is no hard drive which is a sin when you actually sell enough downloadable games to overload the 512MB of memory available and don't change the way you handle the SD cards.

Please god stop reporting things you know nothing about. Especially when you're trying to make it sound like there's a better deal for what you're buying.

Well put, ladies. I am not a PS3 owner, or a credit user at the moment. Nor am I leveraged. Mason, I only criticized Jorge for being denegrating without reason. I was denegrating Jorge for being ignorant, so it is not hypocritical in the least. Mr. Icanbeatnickwallaceup, I must compliment you on your brilliant and innovative "stuffed vagina" comment. It speaks very well to your creative and intellectual abilities, lol. By the way, girls, I am not rich, but someday intend to be. I will be more than happy at that time to provide 50% (or whatever the highest tax bracket will be under our new socialist leader) of my income to pay for all of your welfare and unemployment benefits. Happily yours, Nick.

Please feel free to send me more of your love.

Blow it out your arse Nick Wallace. The only one being ridiculous and ignorant is you. What bliss it must be as out of touch and sheltered as you clearly are.
Nick Wallace said:
Although I applaud your use of "arse", I would humbly have to disagree. And please tell me how I am sheltered. I have a degree in economics, I speak German, and I have traveled to a dozen different European countries, in many of which I stayed with local families to learn the local culture. If that is sheltered, than you must be a man of the world. LOL! Pathetic.
gene/duluth said:
frankly I have had the ps3 for about 1.5 years and I have all the good games, we watch movies and bluerays movies on it and the ps3 network is free for the kids, when you buy the xbox dont forget to add the monthly charge for xbox live to the cost, I also have a wii, lots of fun also but not in the same league as ps3 unless you are 6 years old or retired and not a big gamer, blueray, wireless conection, big harddrive, hands down ps3 over all the the others, unless you are on a big budget, then buy the lower end xbox or wii it will still be fun,

Your comment about "our new socialist leader" shows your ignorance more than anything else you have said. I suppose you are one of the nuts that feel that Sarah Palin is intelligent but wasn't given a fair chance by the media. Ignorance must be bliss for you.

If these guys really want to flood the market why not give these consoles free after one purchases 4 ps3 game titles of his/her choice? Sony could have this promotion exactly around the time the government starts mailing out checks to families to encourage them to spend...A sort of one unit per house hold kinda thing.
This would guarantee immense game sales... and cose the gap within record time..

OMG! I love the hate that I read on this. Gents, gents, lets get back to reasoning shall we? First the best damn screen name in this thread is the guy that took the time to make "NickWallace is a douche", many accolades for that my friend. Nick, you probably only ever traveled to Europe on Google Earth so please spare us with how upper class and well educated you are. Who cares? Why even say that?

Now onto business, PS has been in my blood for over a decade of my life. However, the price point is out of control when compared to the competition regardless of the potentially superior build. Next, for SONY to offer a discount ONLY if you have an approved agreement with them borders on criminal. The writer of the article put it best; no one wants to be told of the "discount" only to get drowned by the disclosure once you enter the door. Its just bad for business. Secondly, the instant approval that comes by using the SONY website is washed away by the higher prices they charge compared to their contracted retailers. So SONY has created a lose-lose situation for themselves.

And Jorge, we're ALL working folk. Some of us do get paid more than others, I'll give you that but nevertheless we all earn our wage. That having been said, please refrain from future posts that blanket the rest of us.

Nick Wallace for President....of NAMBLA....feeg...

Erm Sony lowering the price by $100 would mean around an extra $1billion loss per quarter for them.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the credit markets this morning and I think we know who it is. Children, Children, children! Respond all you want as I will be long gone, never to return to such childish posts, rants or raves!

I'm sorry but SONY has fallen so far out of touch from the world and all of the customers in it, it makes me nuts. The worst part is there Madison Avenue HeadQuarters actually shares office space with multiple creditors. Could they not have just took the elevator down a few floors and checked with any of them. Another black friday another lame duck SONY.
Michael Farren said:
It's not a discount on the PS3. It's an incentive to get the credit card. There's a real difference in their motivation, if not in the effective result for many. Give Sony hell for the things they deserve to get hell for (and this promotion may well be one of them), but at least give it for the right reason.

ABout the article only, its a good move for Sony to offer this deal for 2 reasons; an incentive to buy a ps3, and money made from financing the purchase.

Now for all u pin heads, should BMW lower the price of a 745i to move as many units as the Toyota prius? We would all love it, but it makes no sense from a business standpoint. The one pointed out what u get from a ps3 out the box compared to an x-flop out the box. After u add the wireless, add-in the fact it doesnt play blu ray, replace the batteries for yur controller, and spend a day sifting through all the garbage games, its pointless.
Again BMW 745i does not equal Toyota Prius
and the ps3 is far better then an x-flop or wii.
PS3 is the only true next gen offering, hence the higher price point. Skip a couple of meals fat boy, damn its just a hundred dollar difference, but u easily make that 100 bucks back, on the wi-fi and blu-ray player built right in.
brady (URL) said:
@ Mega, there is no way you are saying that bmw is to toyota as sony is to xbox? If so you did miserably on that portion of your SAT's. Possibly BMW to Lexus... Lexus being the pretty looking machine that pales in performance to a BMW. But BMW to Toyota... rubbish.

Also blu-ray's adoption levels are awful and the masses are just not getting it... at all. SO again touting blue-ray as this wonderful must have that your getting for only $100 is not going to get Sony anywhere (and hasn't).

Another thing I agree with the fact that Sony is a leader in the space in terms of they are ahead of the curve... obviously at this point too ahead of the curve. Product adoption is not knocking at there door fast enough. They need to cut there losses and push units at this point. Like your BMW example (who I might add are now running up to $7000 off incentives on new ones with 0.9% financing) they need to cut some costs and get their product off shelves and into homes.
Joe said:
Are you kidding me? Sony, you know that this is not going to work, right? It is impossible for anyone, even top-tier credit customers, to get approved for any credit due to the upcoming economic depression. What is really needed is a deal in which you could trade in a PS2, Gamecube, or XBOX console plus several games to get a substantial discount on a PS3. Or maybe a $100.00 temporary holiday price cut. Think, Sony, think.

Am I the only one who was excited to see this? $250 for a PS3 is a bargain! Merry Christmas to me!
Joe said:
To poor person who likes nice things: Don't expect that to happen anytime soon due to the recession. The only possible way to get a PS3 at that price is to wait until at least 2011. Sorry.
Fahad said:
Joe- not 2011
u have to wait to get a ps3 until ps4 comes out :D

Well if you can get the credit, buy the system and pay it off the next month. All things considered, pretty good deal if you ask me.
Poor person who likes nice things said:
Joe, I don't understand what you're trying to say. $400-$150=$250 I was approved, but I won't be ordering it from Sony. That way, I can return it to a local store if there's a problem with it. You people act like this is a scam or something.

Ok I called Sony to find out about this credit promotion. Now a customer service rep. told me that if it was through sonyrewards.com I would have to buy the ps3 through sony.com to get the promotional discount. I want to buy it through amazon, since there will be no tax or shipping costs. The sales rep seemed a little confused and said I'd have to buy it through sony.com to get the promotion. Has anyone used this promotion yet or know anything about this?
John said:
Vinney,

There are 2 different applications for the Playstation credit card. The one linked above is if you want to purchase through Sony. The following link is the one you need if you want to purchase through an "authorized Sony retailer" using the card:

Joe said:
I don't see how anyone could get approved for this credit, but nevertheless, I'm not getting a PS3 anytime soon. When I get a new console to keep getting the latest games since the PS2 is in its twilight years, my only option is the Wii, even if it is not as tech-savvy and hardcore as the others. Heck, it still gets Resident Evil and Guitar Hero games. The Wii is cheap enough to not need a discount via near-impossible-to-obtain credit cards. I will not purchase a console that gets bricked by firmware updates and neither will I get one that gets RRoD every 2-3 months. Hurry up, Nintendo, and please launch that next Wii console with HD graphics and/or improve third-party software support soon. Pleeeeeease...
Joe said:
*ignores last post* Oh and also, Microsoft, please make a RRoD-proof XBOX 360 model so that persons who cannot afford PS3s can enjoy high-tech gaming without having to worry about crashing problems.
Vinney said:
Thanks John! Damn I wish I would've waited than. I bought it on the 2nd and its still not here, and it was 280 after tax. Still a huge discount but I want it now! Thanks again

It's actually the reverse type of promotion from what the article says.

If you subscribe to a Sony credit card they will give you 150 off a ps3.

What I'm trying to get at is they are trying to make their credit instrument more appealing than others by packing a deal in.

Like if I sign up for a TD visa I get a free Ipod Nano. Same value about.

If they slashed the price 100 bux it would be like the toronto dominion bank giving away ipod nano just for walking in the door. That makes no sense at all.
Rob said:
Blue ray helped sales of the PS3 but now it is hurting it. The reason and the culprit is the sony standalone blue ray player which sells for $300. This is the reason they can't lower the price of the PS3. They will lower it by $100 when the price of the standalone player can be lowered to $200.
As the cost of manufacturing of these units come down, it will be possible because they can maintain their margins. My prediction is this will happen in January and sales will increase.
I bought my PS3 about 2 months ago at sonystyle.com using the Sony Visa card. I got my $150 credit the next month. $250 for the PS3 was a great deal. I mainly wanted a blue ray player for the HDTV.
FYI - I saw some great deals on updated blue ray players at Costco lately. I would have gone this route if the prices were $200-300 two months ago.

Oh boo hoo sony is arogant. Please. They are a company who's product costs x amount to make. All the things they put into a PS3 is what makes it cost $400 or so. Those of you who complain its too expensive, go buy what you can. Some facts: Xbox 360 fails half the time! You have to send it back to MSOFT wait weeks only to have the one they sent break down. Wow I want a product that is certain to break down on me when Im about to play that $50 plus game I just bought. I think not. And the Wii is great if weak graphics is ok for you. In the end you realy get what you pay for! You have to pay to play!

Pickle dik johnson said:

He broke it down perfectly and even though the price of the Ps3 is hard to swallow, it's the right price for the unit.
