Sirius XM Hits New Low: 20 Cents (SIRI)
Bad day for satellite radio broadcaster Sirius XM: The company's shares closed down 13% today to 20 cents -- an all-time low.
Why? There doesn't seem to be any Sirius corporate news today, so we're pretty sure it's mostly a reflection of lousy growth ahead, the sad state of the consumer electronics business, and direct exposure to the self-destructing auto industry.
Out of curiosity: Would CEO Mel Karmazin consider a reverse split now? In July, he said it wasn't going to happen. But that's when Sirius (SIRI) stock was worth $1.61. Update: Yes, he would. Clusterstock colleague Joe Weisenthal points me to this Reuters article, which says Sirius is considering a reverse split to avoid potentially being delisted by the Nasdaq.

Sirius XM Hosed By GM's Bad News

ALL MONTHLY FEE BIZ MODELS
will get destroyed during this DEPRESSION
It's the fact that most of its new customers are buying new cars. And most people aren't buying new cars anymore.
And there's a lot of places to get your tunes these days.
A pay subscription to radio? Sorry, but I'm not in my car that much. And when I'm at work or at home, there are so many choices online now that why would I pay to subscribe to radio?
I think Karmazan hooked his wagon to Stern way too much. I was a huge fan of Stern back in his heydey (the mid 90's).
However Stern is old news now. His act is stale, and not only that he has become everything he once despised and ridiculed (ditching his wife for a model, always talking about where he goes and who's there, etc.). All the things that made Stern good and fresh and original are all gone from his act.
I'd love to believe in XM, but I can't find one compelling reason to do so. If there's no reason to believe in it, then the end result is fail. Sorry Mel, but you're fighting a losing battle here.
Please prove me wrong, if you can...
HOW ABOUT ACCESS TO *EVERYTHING* ONLINE, if you have a subscription.
How about ONE subscription for AS MANY radios as you own?
How about less clutter of 100% crap channels. ( the 40s music channel? What's that? )
How about network audio ( NBC, CBS, etc ) Or more cable channel simulcasting. ( Where's MSNBC? )
How about custom audio channels? Where you can setup your own shoutcast URL ( or whatever ) and beam it down to your car?
I mean, these things are all possible...Sat radio can't be a pay version of old radio...that's just dumb.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
The whole point of XM is that it is subscription-based, so NO ADS! Plus the consistent, strong signal. I live in Boston, and I can't tell you how many signals fade at night, or are only receivable at night, or endure persistent static creep throughout the day. So you're really only left with three or four strong stations to choose from.
XM Sirius needs better marketing to promote its benefits, and needs to increase the variety of their content. Not within channels, but increase the variety of their channels. More niche.
BTW, I listen to the 40s music channel, Old-Time radio theater, the Dylan music hour, America Left talk, and American Standards (now Siriusly Sinatra). None of these things are available on standard terrestrial radio, at least not in a dedicated, concentrated form. 40s radio even plays news broadcasts from WWII between songs.
The problem with Sirius XM is there are too many rap channels, too many rock channels, too much duplication of mainstream music. Stop trying to duplicate free radio.
XM needs to embrace the Long Tail.
