Microsoft Poaches Yahoo's Top Search Engineer

|

Sean Suchter.jpgYahoo's VP of Search Technology Sean Suchter --  "I run Yahoo's web search engine," reads his LinkedIn profile --  tells us he's leaving the company and joining Microsoft.

A Valleywag's tipster says Schuster's departure means "the end of Yahoo search." We think that's a bit overdramatic. Yahoo (YHOO) search is more popular than Microsoft (MSFT) search because Yahoo.com is a very popular home page -- not because it's better search technology. (Is it, even? Who knows is our point.)

Nevertheless, judging by Valleywag's tipster, it does sound like Microsoft may have plucked a very popular engineering leader:

Everyone in the office is shocked. I've been on the Yahoo Search team for a while and he is the one key executive that it all depends on. If Microsoft has convinced him to leave and join them, they won't need to buy Yahoo Search. We will just all join Microsoft anyway. I am definitely going to send him my resume.

Valleywag's also obtained a memo, which we've pasted below.:

From: Tuoc Luong
Date: 11/18/08 3:43 PM
To: Yahoo Search Team

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, I have to give some bad news to you. Sean Suchter has resigned. Sean’s last day will be December 19th.

Some of you will find this news shocking given that Sean has been a Gibraltar rock at Yahoo and in particular for the Search team. . I understand this.

I will point out that we’re on a good trajectory. We’ve released some good products and capabilities and the industry is beginning to take notice. We’ve closed the gap in Algo relevance and making great strides in building the next generation differentiated search experience and step function in relevance – not to mention infrastructure overhaul that prepares us for the future.

I came here to take on Google because I believe Yahoo above all is best positioned to take the battle to Google. I think we’re on the right path to changing the tide and would love to see everyone make the journey but I respect Sean’s personal decision. I’m committed to continue the battle against Google as long as Yahoo positions Search to be competitive (and I believe we are). I hope each and all of you feel the same way and stand with me to battle Google.

I’ve asked Arnab to step up and take over Sean’s role as head of YST. Just as Sean has been a strong arm for me, Arnab has been a strong arm for Sean. Although Sean casts a large shadow, I believe Arnab will step up to fill the hole with your support. Arnab will cast his own shadow as the new leader of YST and it’s the same YST team that has deliver great products like Search Assist, Secure Scan, SearchMonkey, BOSS, numerous MLR and QRW release to close the GAP in core relevance.

Sean and Arnab have been communicating to the YST leaders about the changes. Arnab has been thinking and discussing the new organization with people. He will send out an e-mail describing his organizational thoughts and plan for YST soon. I believe with the support of other leaders (myself, Bharat, Yongdong, Nam, ..etc), Arnab will fill the void and continue the battle with Google. I urge everyone to support Arnab in his new endeavor.

Tomorrow, I’ll be holding an all managers meeting to discuss the changes and Q&As.

Please wish Sean the best in his future endeavor and congratulate Arnab in his new role.

Thanks

Tuoc

If you've got the resources to scale hardware (like microsoft), you could probably duplicate yahoo search (which is very good, the only credible google competitor) with about twenty core people.

It's much cheaper than buying yahoo search outright -- just make some job offers.

Gaining market share for microsoft's search product is harder (which is what you'd be paying for), but I don't think they've pulled out all the stops on that since their live search is currently so poor.

And they are at almost half yahoo's marketshare now, which I find unbelievable.

Tuoc sounds like a moron. If we play this game of "for Yahoo to win, Google has to lose", then Yahoo is going straight to the grave.

Shocking that someone in Tuoc's position does not understand this...

Until they hire Google's head Search Engineer, I really don't see what the story is.

Another exec leaves. Management, are you getting the message?

I think Google's top Search Engineers are about 95% vested in Google.

On an interesting / funny side note -- 2005 Search Engine Strategies Chicago...I saw a Microsoft Search Engineer searching for information online...and even he was using Google.

Ever notice that Yahoo never hires anyone from Google?

If the traffic on Yahoo search is largely driven by brand recognition and traffic to Yahoo's properties then what's the point of buying Yahoo's search?

Does that mean when I do a search on Yahoo it will actually be with Live search?

I'm surprised there was no non-compete agreement for at least a year. If I were Yang or Decker, I'd make one last f-off and prevent this guy from going to MS. Microsoft should be going after Apple OS architects not this chump.

Nice catch for MS. Hopefully, he can close the distance that still exists between their search and even Yahoo's, far less Goog's.
Good jump :)

I wonder what really made him jump ship though!

you can do a lot of poaching when that $45BN you were going to spend on an acquisition didnt get spent

I have a web site with a live chat button, that lets customers instant message with our sales team. Yahoo search has clicked on that button a few times per week, every week, without fail. Every other search engine has figured out that this button is not part of the site that they need to crawl. Maybe Yahoo's spiders are just getting lonely...

The mainstream (bulk of users using Yahoo or Google) don't know nor care who gets hired or what. They just go for who's most popular. Google is it.

This is a great move by MS. But ultimately, they'll need Y!'s search unit (if not Y! itself) as a brand rather than the technology. As every techie knows, better doesn't always mean leader.

I don't know, but I think if it was me getting this email at my workplace, it would be all I could do not to off myself. The tone of it is so negative (eg "the world has ended with Sean leaving", "GOOG is making us bend over and take it in the ass so I'm mentioning them in every other sentence so we don't forget", etc.). Yikes. If it was me reading this email at my workplace I'd follow Sean right out of there - not because he's necessarily the second-coming that everyone - including Sean - paints him up as - but because the mood at Yahoo! must be some weird mixture of horrifying and terrible if that is the most cheerful, professional email that anyone there can rustle up these days. What is Yahoo! becoming now - besides a mess?
