BlackBerry Bold Launching Nov. 4: $299 At AT&T (RIMM)

|

blackberry-bold.jpgThe BlackBerry Bold delay is finally over: RIM's (RIMM) new smartphone will go on sale at AT&T (T) on Nov. 4 for as little as $299 after subsidy, RIM said today. RIM's beleaguered shares spiked on the news, up 4.1% to $52.57.

The launch is certainly good for RIM -- there's been some concern that the Bold, and its other big Christmas smartphone -- the touchscreen Storm at Verizon (VZ) Wireless -- wouldn't be ready for the holiday shopping season. But the Bold, at least, will be in time. (It makes sense that RIM could announce the Storm's on-sale date as soon as next Monday, when Verizon posts Q3 results.)

Will a $299 Bold still sell well next to a $199 iPhone? Probably not as strong as it would have a year ago, when Apple's phone was $399. But there's still an audience for a phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard. And there's still a lot of companies that are strongly tied into BlackBerry's mobile email service -- RIM says about half of Bold's buyers in other countries are enterprise customers.

$299? Netbooks are looking like steals compaird to the price of smartphones. RIMM is in a tight spot. They are starting to look like Palm.
OK. I'll carry my smartphone in my pocket, and you can bring your netbook in a bag. And we'll see who can get to their email faster.

I'm surprised they priced it so high compared to what's on the market already. This price point will not get new consumers on the platform.
Dig, I bet it could be $249 or $199 before Christmas.

IMO the initial price makes sense. Three reasons: 1) those who really prefer BB's and want an upgraded model will pony up and the $100 will not likely be a deterrent, 2) the volume they'd attract at $199 would not significantly affect early adoption, at least not enough to make up for the money they'd be foregoing, and they can always lower the price 2-3 months out to grab the wider market, and 3) 16GB iPhone is $299
Yep. Agreed.

I don't think the price sounds unreasonable at all. Its a brand new smartphone, this is what these things cost. Not to mention Im sure the price will drop before the holidays. I think it's a great move for the company and I'm glad they finally got it together and got this released. RIMM still appeals to a large number of professionals and while sentiment is down right now (http://www.predictwallstreet.com/forecast.aspx?symbol=SIRI) and so is the price, this is nothing unusual for the normally volatile RIMM.
