Amazon's Kindle Starting To Pass The Subway Test? (AMZN)

|

kindle.jpgIt's not just us: Real people are seeing real Amazon (AMZN) Kindle e-readers on subways, on the bus, in airports, all over the place!

We're getting close to the one-year mark on Amazon's gadget -- Nov. 19, to be exact. And while we can't say for sure that it's the "Future of Reading" -- as Steven Levy's Newsweek cover proclaimed on launch day -- it's certainly feeling less like a UFO sighting when someone pulls one out.

I get stopped all the time about mine on the subway or anywhere else I'm trying to read. I've also noticed more Kindles and Sony readers lately out in the wild.

saw several on the train and one at the airport in the greater ny area in the last week alone. was nice enough to be sitting next to a user on the train who kindly let me read over his shoulder, definitely much easier on the eyes than any computer screen or hand held device out there. no matter how much you love your blackberry or iphone, the displays just don't do it for me for long contextual reading, yeah, short lines aren't bad but there's something to be said for the way the e-ink softens the contrast more like a book, it's the difference between long tube florescent lights and incandescent bulbs, they both light the room but only one glows with that warm hue that makes sitting with it on not as painful.

anyway, the minute either the sony reader or the kindle is able to integrate a fully functional on page note taking and highlighting option, perhaps a clip and save or clip and send function, better book marking as well as a smaller overall package (while not loosing that wonderful screen size) they'll have more of my vote.

Im looking at a Kindle right now, what a marvellous machine!
