Hollywood's DVD Problem: Not Going Away

Assuming that the rest of Hollywood falls in line with Warner Bros. and Sony's Blu-ray camp, the movie studios will have a fighting chance to replace their old DVD revenue with next gen DVD revenue. But it won't happen for several years, notes Rich "Nostradamus" Greenfield. Rich predicts (reg required) that DVD sales will slump another 3% in 2008.

After that? In part that's dependent on how quickly Universal and Paramount come aboard. Universal isn't locked into any arrangement with the HD DVD camp, but Viacom's (VIAB) Pararmount and Dreamworks may be, Rich notes:

Do Paramount/Dreamworks/Dreamworks Animation have exit clauses from their HD DVD exclusive contracts, if all other studios embrace Blu-ray? If not, all are stuck in the wrong next-gen DVD format thru 2008. In addition, if they drop HD DVD exclusivity, do they have to give up some of the “blood” money they took from Toshiba in 2007?

Separately, consumers still need to 1) upgrade their old sets to HiDef ones, which is happening at the high end of the market but still isn't a mainstream behavior and 2) become convinced that they need new DVD players. The latter isn't a given, because for many folks, conventional DVDs viewed on nice HiDef screens looks pretty good already. And if that's the case, then they're not likely to be in a hurry for a new machine, format war or no.

Just days before CES 2008, Warner Home Video has announced that they
are going to stop supporting HD-DVD and support the Blu-Ray format
exclusively. There are rumors that this decision was made after Sony
paid Warner 1.8 billion dollars to sign an exclusive contract, one of
the largest payoffs yet (the second largest being 150 million to
Paramount and Dreamworks to go HD-DVD exclusively.)

Warner's official response, however, was:
"In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will
release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc
format beginning later this year" it was announced today by Barry
Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President,

After August 2007, Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony said that the Blu-
Ray format was in a stalemate. "It's a difficult fight. We were trying
to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount
changed sides," Howard Stringer told the AP.

Blu-Ray was winning the HD format war in North America and Asia, but
not Europe, until the Dreamworks/Paramount buyout.

Many consider this new Warner Home Video buyout to be the end of the
format war completely.

This is far from over. Several people, myself included are discussed at the recent move by Warner - dropping a serious high definition movie format to support sony's playstation console instead.

HD DVD offers too many advantages over the playstation discs to sway people from there chosen format. As for warner films, I guess I'll waiting another five years for HD digital downloads. Until then they're simply turning away good money by not supporting HD DVD.

I simply cant see stores continuing to push HD-DVD players now that BluRay has exclusivity on 70% of movies. I think this whole situation will now be sorted out very quickly. Paramount and Universal may be contracted to release HD movies only on HD-DVD at the moment but that doesn't mean they HAVE to release HD movies at all while still under contract. They could simply stop releasing until their exclusivity deal runs out.
