Google's Panasonic-YouTube TV Deal: Yawn

No, it's not GoogleTV. But the search giant and Matushita, which makes Panasonic TVs, will team up to sell HDTVs with built-in access to Google's YouTube video site and Picasa photo-sharing service, Reuters reports.

A smart move for Google, whose ad-driven business always benefits from increased distribution. The more eyeballs on Google products, the better.

But hardly revolutionary. Panasonic's deal sounds a lot like an announcement Sony made at CES last year, in which some of its Bravia TVs would play Web video from AOL, Yahoo!, and Sony's Grouper. Another non-starter.

The problem: TV companies are still not giving consumers what they want. "Walled-garden" deals like these and closed-off, set-top systems like Apple TV just aren't compelling enough to justify the investment. What will we pay for? A TV with a real Web browser that offers full access to the entire Web via wi-fi/broadband -- not some crippled gimmick.

I think this is a great initiative that Panasonic is taking to change the TV industry. The future of television is upon us and someone will have to lead the way and set the standard. I believe Panasonic will be very successful at doing that. Google and Panasonic is just a beginning to what's more to come for the future of television.

Now I don't have to get up off the couch to check what's new on youtube and could do all of that at a click of a button while watching other programs using the PIP.

This is a great innovation to the television to say the least.

I'm pretty much with Yeah That Works: YouTube would look beyond-crummy on regular TV; on HDTV just forget about it. It would be a horror. I haven't seen YouTube's new codec in action yet (has anyone, or is it one of those closed beta deals?) but considering the overall low quality of what's posted to YouTube...I do agree. I *would* like to see some interactivity between TV and what's on the Web, however. Sucks that I can't watch Internet TV - news, shows, video-enabled podcasts, whatever - on my television so I don't have to sit in front of the computer to see everything I want to watch. 1. You can't seriously compare Youtube with Web video from AOL, Yahoo! The point is that TV "is" a walled garden and if you think how easily they can add a Nickelodeon module with all their content on demand --and CNN, and HBO -- will you still have a"non-starter"?

2. Anybody can add a browser to a TV, however only geeks are looking for that complex of an experience and the costs of building that into a TV are prohibitive. I feel like you don't understand the fundamental limitations of the hardware and in particular the need for a simple interface. Nobody is limiting the content on the Panasonic TV; it is only a walled garden in terms of setting some early technical standards to be met to get on the tv (including a consistent interface and axial navigation.)

3. Web surfing and video watching are not the same activity.

4. Do you think you might be underestimating the advantage to having everything built into a tv using the same remote and navigation actions people are used to with their normal viewing. Perhaps more importantly not having an additional box, and remote, to hook up to your tv and stereo makes this a huge difference over the Apple TV or Sony Bravia box, or slingbox or LG or any of the other IPTV options - all arriving as crippled gimmicks according to you because those platforms expect content distributers to build to an easily used interface.

The TV is for passive entertainment (kicked back with a beer) or gaming. Consumers have shown ZERO interest in interactive services in their living rooms. Maybe the gadget that puts caller ID on their TV is cool, but that's still passive.

Next is the content itself. Web content is designed for little viewports embedded on a web page. The VAST majority of content on YouTube looks hideous full-screen on a PC. You want to put that on an HDTV? Why?

Even if you make the argument that the H.264 codec YouTube is evolving to helps address the scaling issue (it will), nothing helps the fact that the entire YouTube content pipeline is GIGO - garbage in, garbage out. The content SOURCE isn't HD quality (by far), so how can the output possibly look good on an HDTV?

Bottom line - this is a bad product idea, and your idea of what consumers want isn't backed up by consumer behavior.
