Is Mr. Jobsy a little peeved that there is a product or a market out there that he hasn't cornered? Reading goes beyond books Jobsy, and I dont know if you've heard of it, but there is this thing called the internet. No its not a dump truck, its a series of tubes, and people like...read stuff on it, like...every waking hour. I know the iphone and ipod are really cool, but ebook readers are the future. Not necessarily the Kindle, but I certainly wont be talking his opion seriously about this.

Forget the Amazon Kindle book reader; it will never go anywhere, as far as the mass market is concerned. With the statistic that 40% of the people are reading less than one book a year, and 60% of the people reading one book a year (and a very few reading more than one book a year) -- it's definitely not going to go anywhere.

Now, on the other hand, I would really like reading books on the MacBook Air. Now, that's a book reader for sure. It's time to put those books in a good generic (and long-lived) format and put it on the computer. I use my laptop for a lot of stuff -- and I could sure use the MacBook Air for the quick, take-it-with-you-in-a-hurry laptop, slim-line, all-around laptop, and have another heavy-duty work-horse (more powerful) laptop for other uses.

That's what we need, are the readers to go on the laptops. I already read many books online (a lot of computer books and other types of books). I also use a reader service for all sorts of computer books on the web (don't have to buy them, just read about whatever computer book I want on that web service).

We don't need that Amazon Kindle book reader -- nope, put it on the computer where it belongs.

Conspiracy theory: Steve just hates EVERYTHING with 3G Internet access!

This means 60% of people read one book or more a year. I'll bet people are reading fewer books because they're not yet as "on demand" as other forms of media like music and film (which Apple has solved) as well as e-magazines and blogs. I'll venture to say close to everyone (in the US at least) reads on some level.

Inasmuch, CD sales and Movie Ticket sales are dipping. Is this because people aren't listening to music and watching movies anymore? (4 billion songs sold on iTunes tells me otherwise.)

Apple hasn't solved immediate book-sized content delivery in a form-factor. The Kindle has, and indirectly competes for the on-demand entertainment space along with the Apple TV.

So, will the Kindle (and similar products) reinvigorate book sales as the iTunes has for music? Or, is Steve Jobs simply poo-pooing it because he's not in that market?

One Kindle fan - SAI Chairman Kevin Ryan, who test-drove our reader on some recent trips, and ended up ordering several books. Which reminds me that I need to submit an invoice, since those books have been charged to my account...
