Obama Wins The Valley. He's The New iPhone

CNBC is reporting that Hillary Clinton has the edge in Silicon Valley, but based on my personal polling, that's horsesh**.  Nearly every venture capitalist, entrepreneur and friend I know is voting for Obama. Several have admitted to full blown "man crushes."

It's possible I do know people voting for Hillary, but if so, they're not about to admit it. Supporting Obama has suddenly become digi-cool.

The big-name backers are Symantec CEO John Thompson, who had a fundraiser dinner for Obama last year, and Google CEO Eric Schmidt. But if my Web 2.0 universe is any indication, the love is startlingly broad-based.

Eight of my Facebook friends have posted the "Yes We Can" video. (www.dipdive.com). And Twitter -- the barometer of Valley cool -- is overrun with people who want everyone to know they've got a crush on Obama. Several VCs have told me they "can't wait" for the general election because they've already capped out on primary donations to Obama. He's the new Tesla, the new iPhone, the new accessory. Or better put, he's the new Bill Clinton.

I don't know who CNBC is talking to--maybe some folks in Sacramento or Bakersfield--but here in the land of the digerati, it's a one candidate race. And his name's Obama.

As for the content of this article: Silicon Valley, as in the high tech/VC culture, is definitely part of Obama's core supporter group. Not surprising that some many of us find ourselves man-crushing. Fortunately, he's been having luck expanding beyond blacks and wealthy affluent liberals in recent weeks, which he'll of course need to do. I know Valley folks literally chanting the man's name at random.

Now....about Hillary. I do not like her that much either, but she has the knowledge and experience to make a difference.

according to my CNN the "pros" miscalled some states last night even when numbers were coming in. what two counties are you talking about? last i checked, San Francisco is pretty big part of Silicon Valley and it went to Obama, despite a democratic party that is very Clinton-loyal. It's also the core of the young high tech and web 2.0 movements, so turns out my anecdotes were actually pretty spot on.

@ michael: indeed! a great point. earlier tonight i dubbed this a battle of old and new silicon valley. more to your point, there's a difference between the place-on-the-map silicon valley and silicon valley the tech "scene." the former obviously matters in votes and delegates; the latter matters in cache and cash. and i still think obama has the edge there-- john doerr aside. but he's gotta win the nomination first. also looks like he cut down her lead here by a hefty margin in recent days, based on polls and results.

much apologies to PEhub but i don't read the site, (in fact i thought it was subscription only?) so it'd be pretty hard for me to lift the story. besides which, this isn't exactly a "scoop." talk to 15 people in the valley or watch that twitter map for five minutes and you've pretty much got the flavor. if anything the fact that i had no clue they did a story and it's apparently similar backs up the post. i guess my poll was more scientific than i knew!
