This life situation outstanding and I often miss the situation. It continued geopolitical downhill; if you want to do this you should have the talisman money, so you can do the things. It's just incredible how mac fanatics like Blodget can see a prune and think he's smelling a rose. Under any rational evaluation that can even be dreamed of the Apple air is like every other Mac: a second rate machine that has to be armed with 3rd party software that enables it to run Windows to justify its existence. I am so sick of hearing these nut cases bash the operating system that 97% of us use very happily everyday. When Apple dropped computer from its name why didn't they add the word Toy so they could accurately describe themselves: "The Apple Toy Company".

It seems to me that they wanted to take advantage of the exposure to showcase the 'Air' exactly to push it as their 'prototype', much like auto makers show nice coupes knowing perfectly well that in the end people will stick with sedans.
What's interesting is the series of innovations and design clues that are in the MBAir that will eventually find their place in future MBPros, and then MBooks: and this will boost sales. It's only a matter of weeks before macbook pros are unveiled.

Just as important, that's 40% growth on half the business. iPods only account for a quarter of the business (a third if you throw in iTunes). iPhones, meanwhile, are a rounding error, and will be for most of 2008

Still, I predict that Apple is going to become a Motorola scale player in the phone biz in the next 24 months. Of course that may say more about Motorola than Apple :)

Hank: Check our our handy AAPL Google Spreadsheet. In the Sept. quarter, Mac laptop unit sales were up 37% y/y, and total Mac unit sales were up 34% y/y. Meanwhile, iPod sales were up just 17% y/y. Analysts are even more bullish on Dec. quarter Mac sales, but are lowering their iPod sales estimates. The Mac is a bigger deal than you think.

That said, I think the iPhone will be a HUGE future growth driver ('09 and beyond), but only because of service revenue.

Just curious, what is the current year over year mac growth rate is currently? Not being snarky here, I am too lazy to look it up and I am sure you know.

Whatever it is, it is hard for me to believe that if Apple is successful (as it seems to be) in taking over the smartphone category, that Macs will be where the major growth comes from.

PCs are a legacy, slow growth business. And yes, Apple can gain market share. But I am guessing any growth here will be single digit. Not bad for such a big business, but phones are a big business too. if Apple is selling at a 7m unit run rate that is where *all* of the future growth of apple is. They will ad new models, lower price points and hit the lower end of the market. I bet they go up market too. I am guessing that happens this year, or close thereto.

I guess by tying your comments to growth within the next year you have an out, but as I see it most of their growth as a company is going to come from being a phone company. You may have to go *slightly* outside that 12 month window to see it. But if I am handicapping their stock, thats why I am long Apple, not Macs.
