AOL Mass Firings: The View From Abroad

A reader in Deutschland tells us that the article below says that AOL will whack two-thirds of its German staff-- keeping 70 out of 170. (We, unfortunately, have no idea what the article says).  The same reader has heard rumors that the company will sack 90 in London and more than 150 in Paris.  The German article also apparently says 3,000 US employees are goners, which seems high to us (our current estimate is 2,000-2,500 worldwide).

Rund 100 Mitarbeiter sollen entlassen werden.

Der Portalbetreiber AOL befindet sich offenbar in
einer dramatischen Schieflage. Von den 170 Mitarbeitern in der Deutschland-Zentrale bleiben anscheinend nur 70 übrig. Freitag vergangener Woche habe die Belegschaft auf einer
Mitarbeiterversammlung erfahren, dass in der Zentrale in Hamburg zwei Drittel der 170 Arbeitsplätze abgebaut werden sollen, erfuhr W&V aus dem Umfeld des Unternehmens. Seit einiger Zeit bezieht AOL immer mehr Inhalte über Partner wie etwa Welt online, Autobild.de, Amica Online, Fit for Fun Online und Max Online.

Auch in Frankreich und England soll es Entlassungen geben. Künftig werde das Europa-Geschäft weitgehend in London gebündelt. Auch im Mutterland USA soll es einen dramatischen Jobabbau geben. So sollen dort bei der Time-Warner-Tochter 3.000 Mitarbeiter gehen. Hintergrund sämtlicher Maßnahmen sind dem Vernehmen nach die forschen Renditeziele der US-Führung. Das Unternehmen selbst wollte zu der Entwicklung keine Stellung nehmen.

It is an article of an Marketing Sales Magazine, not a memo by Falco. The numbers are pretty accurate. The US number is PROBABLY a simple spin-back of what the author has read here at SAI a month ago. Remember, it is a monthly print magazine, so they don't have the newer lower numbers that SAI stated recently.
