As Flash Video Rises, On2 Shares Fall
Adobe Systems, whose Flash video product dominates the Web video industry, made a smart move today: The Valley-based software giant announced that it is adding support for a high-definition video compression format called H.264 -- the same format used on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs, on Apple's iPhone, and in other important places.
The winners: big media, independent filmmakers, and anyone else who wants to distribute hi-def video using Flash's near-ubiquitous plug-in. The loser: Clifton Park, N.Y.-based On2 Technologies, which, until today, provided the best-possible video compression format for Flash video. On2 does not own the H.264 format, whose patent royalties are administered by a firm called MPEG Licensing Authority. Adobe will still support On2's format, meaning On2 will still earn royalties, but many content creators will choose the new, higher-quality format, making On2's video format less relevant.
On2's Q2 revenue jumped 66% year-over-year from $1.53 million in 2Q06 to $2.55 million in 2Q07, "primarily attributed to increases in sales of our Flix and Adobe Flash related products," the company said in its 10-Q. After today's announcement that Adobe would add support for a rival video format, On2 shares fell 20% on the Amex market on more than twice their normal trading volume.

On2 has software and hardware products that
support both H.264 codecs and VPx.
Comparing implementations of H.264 encoders and compare On2's H.264 encoder with others.
On2 not only have much smaller hardware requirements but they are winning choice for multiple codecs implementations where you need devices streaming.
VP8 is also coming and claims to be much better than H.264.
On2 has numerous deals that are just pending to be reveiled. Sun signed a multi-year deal with On2 to get their video codecs versions for JavaFx.
Stay tunes, you cannot conclude from any logical analysis that On2 is a looser.

Mike Savello of ON2 Technologies talks with Peter Cervieri about ON2, H.264, Adobe as well as other streaming codeics and providers.
Adobe ready to release VP6 HD Format anyday now!

There is still no vp8 on earth but profeesionals of video compression are sure that it will not be better than 2007/2008 H.264 encoders.
Cheers
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
H.264, aka MPEG-4, was never going anywhere and as bandwidth increases across the internet it becomes more and more viable for the web, though in my experience is still a bit weighty file-size-wise. I think On2 is handling this very well.
But it's 100% certain that the majority of On2's current revenues have come from selling their own tools for doing VP6 video in Flash.
Consequently if there is less content growing in that older format, that could arguably mean lessening demand for VP6 tools.
So although perhaps not perfectly worded, the author's original conclusion stands correct.
Mobile Content.....176x144,10-15fps....50-60 Kbps
Internet/Standard Definition.....640x480,24 fps....1-2 Mbps
High Definition......1280x720,24p....5-6 Mbps
Full High Definition...1920x1080, 24p....7-8 Mbps

If you listen to CEO of AKAM, key is file size, which is not a issue on DVD and the like. Same MPS for standard gives HD at present on VP7. VP8 it seem is raising that bar farther from the last CC. To get 30 FPS at 1920x1088 takes 20Mps from H.264 I won't list them all but easy to find on Wikipedia.
@Camille - Flash only supports VP6, not VP7, so not sure how that's relevant to this post.
@Wireless_Raven - On2 rep says their terms with Adobe are confidential, so if you have some evidence you can point me toward, I'm happy to take a look at it.

Dan Frommer---Your drivel is very poorly researched concerning what this all means to ON2
Events will prove you very wrong soon and will reveal the worth of your poor cognitive skills.
